چکیده

The increasing of crude oil prices recently in the world, the need for an alternative source of fuel in the Indonesia is urgently required. In addition, growing concern about climate change is driving the need for “low-carbon” fuels. One highly potential form of renewable and low-carbon fuel is biogas from anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. Anaerobic digestion is a naturally occurring process of decomposition of organic matter by microbes in an oxygen-free environment. Anaerobic digestion has been used throughout the globe for many years, especially in areas outside of the Indonesia. However, it has not been applied widely for production of biogas as a power generator fuel. Millions of tons of wastes are generated each year from agricultural, municipal, and industrial sources. Agricultural wastes such as palm oil mill effluent (POME) and Sago mill effluent can be used as the feedstock to produce biogas. The waste can be converted into usable biogas through anaerobic digestion. This can reduce the adverse impact on the environment and can be used on the farm to take care of a part, if not all, of its energy needs. In addition, biogas can be cleaned and upgraded to biomethane, a gas indistinguishable from conventional natural gas that can be used as a fuel. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a potential biogas production from agricultural wastes and conversion to a fuel. In order to understand the potential of biogas production, we provide a brief overview of the two main stages such as production of biogas via anaerobic digester and the uses of biogas as fuel for power generator.

Kinetics Studies Impact of Initial pH and Addition of Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on Biogas Production from Tofu Wastewater in Indonesia

The purpose of this work was to study the effect of initial pH and yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae on biogas production from tofu wastewater (TW). The initial pH was varied in ranging of 5 – 9 in substrate without yeast (T5-T9) and with yeast (TY5-TY9). The results showed that optimum initial pH was 8. The maximum biogas was resulted in T8 (275 mL) and TY8 (421 mL). Yeast addition increased tota...

Valorization of municipal solid wastes through biogas production in Iran

Iran is a developing country with a population of over 80 million. The total daily MSWs production in Iran is about 50 million kg. Most of the MSWs in this country is being disposed of in the landfills. Some of the landfills are located in the urban area or near to sea, river, and forest. In this regard, the management of MSWS becomes a concern in Iran. One solution to manage MSWs and mitigate ...

Evaluation of Biogas as an Alternative Driving Force of Electrically Operated Vehicles: A Case Study

In the present world, energy is indispensable for maintaining the comfort level and living standard of the human. On the other hand, the energy crisis is a major problem in most of the developing countries like Bangladesh. A possible reason is that, the decreasing level of conventional energy sources and the lack of initiatives for introducing the alternative sources of energy. Moreover, the in...

Biogas Technology, Applications, Perspectives and Implications

The major purpose of this study was to examine the advantages and implications of biogastechnology in the agriculture sector. Biogas is one of many biomass energy sources, which includeanything that was once alive and that can generate energy (except for fossil fuels, which are notrenewable). To talk of biogas is to talk of agriculture, since biogas generation starts withagricultural waste prod...
